Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the readability of the descriptive text written by the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Tanjungpinang. This research was included as the descriptive qualitative. This research used the term of participant as the research subject, not population and sample. The research participans were the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Tanjungpinang, taken by using the purposive sampling technique. The researcher asked each participants to make a descriptive text with one certain theme consisted of two paragraphs. Then these texts were submitted and analyzed further relating to the readability by the researcher using the Flesch Reading Ease formula founded by Rudolf Flesch. The result of the calculation is the readability of twenty nine texts was still included as the 5th grade level (Very Easy), the readability of five texts was included as 6th grade level (Easy), and the readability of one text was included as 7th grade level (Fairly Easy). Therefore, this research showed that the readability of the descriptive texts written by the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Tanjungpinang was not appropriate for the 8th grade students Keywords: Readability, Descriptive Text, Analysis
