Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of Jengket game on students’ speaking skill at SMP Negeri 10 Tanjungpinang. The method that is used is quantitative method which the data is served by numerical and tested by statistical formula of t-test. The research design is quasi-experimental design which involves 30 students in VII D as the experimental and 30 students in VII E as the control class. To get the sample, the researcher used the cluster random sampling. The experimental class was taught by using Jengket game and the control class was taught by using powerpoint. The researcher gave pretest before teaching learning activity. After the teaching learning activity has been finished, the researcher gave posttest to know the students’ speaking skill achievement. The scores of both pretest and posttest were analyzed by statistics descriptive test. Then, the data were tested by homogeneity, normality, and hypothesis test. From this research, it can be seen that the mean score of experimental class was 76.10 while the mean score of control class was 70.97. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Jengket game towards students’ speaking skill at SMP Negeri 10 Tanjungpinang. The t-observation was 3.66 while the t-table in significant 0.05 and df 58 was 2.00. It means that the t-observation is higher than the t-table. Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Based on the result of t-test and the differences between mean score of experimental and control class, it can be concluded that the Jengket game has a significant effect on students’ speaking skill at SMP Negeri 10 Tanjungpinang.
