Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the correlation between students' motivation and their English achievement at seventh grade students of SMPN 3 SATAP Durai in academic year 2017/2018. This research was included as the quantitative research. The scores of students' motivation were obtained from the students after they filled out the questionnaire about students motivation. The questionnaire consists of 30 questions. This questionnaire contains the student motivations described by Gardner (2004). For the scores of learning English students, the researcher gets it through the documentation of the English teacher class. The score of learning English is derived from the scores of daily learning, midterm and their final exam. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment through SPSS 16 program. The results of the data analysis showed that r_xy is 0.174. Then the researcher compare this score with r_table at the 5% significance level (0.413), the correlation between student's motivation and English achievement is negative because (r_xy < r_table= 0.174 < 0.413). So the alternative hypothesis reads that "r_xy < r_table means that the correlation between variable X and variable Y" is rejected. Keywords: Motivation, English Achievement, Correlation
