Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in reading fluency between Malay students and heterogeneous students in reading the narrative text of the eighth grade of the 2017/2018 academic year. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were the second semester VIII students in SMP N 13 Tanjungapang Satap and SMP N 5 Tanjungpinang were selected using purposive sample technique. The data of this research are captured using instruments in the form of reading tests, while the material is adjusted to the topics or topics that have been taught in the class under study. Researchers provide performance tests, and ask students to read them one by one in front of the class. It’s checked and after that is calculated the value obtained by each student. After calculating the data, it can be concluded that the research shows that the average value of heterogeneous students' reading fluency is 3.3 significantly higher than the average reading score of Malay students by 2.4. And each student has a difference in fluency in reading. The average students who are not able to use fluency well in reading narrative texts due to lack of concentration. As a result, the sound character was trembling and slow. Of course this makes a lack of good reading fluency in reading the text. Keywords : Reading fluency, Malay students, heterogeneous students
