Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of applying Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 3 Bintan in academic year 2018/2019. The research applied quasi-experimental design with quantitative analysis. It used two classes, the experimental class applied Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) and the control class applied lecturing strategy. The population was students of eigth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Bintan which consist of 155 students. Researcher used purposive sampling to choose the sample. The sample was 57 students (27 students of experimental class, 30 students of control class). The instruments used in this research was test that consist of 2 paragraphs and 5 multiple choices. This research was conducted by following procedure: giving pre-test, applying treatment, and giving post-test. After getting the score of both experimental and control classes, the data were analyzed and processed using t-test formula by using Minitab 17. The result showed that the mean of post test in experimental class was 93,3, while the mean of post test in control group was 78,7. Then, the post-test scores of the two groups were compared by independent t-test and the result showed that the p-value was lower than t-table which was 0,003 < 0, 05. It meant that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. It can be conclude that there was an effectiveness of applied Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 3 Bintan.
