Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to find whether or not there is a correlation between students’ habit in watching English movie (X) and their listening skill (Y) at 4th semester of English Department students of Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji Tanjungpinang. This research was conducted at the English Education Study Program of Teacher Training And Education Faculty of Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji Tanjungpinang. The population in this research was all of the fourth-semester students in the academic year 2018/2019 which consisted 62 students, and the sample taken was 30 students in E.02 class by using cluster random sampling. The method used in this research was the quantitative method with the correlational design. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the instruments used were listening test and questionnaire of students’ habit in watching English movie. The result showed that there was a correlation, with the index value of correlation coefficient (r_xy) of 0.463 which meant there was a moderate correlation. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that the index value of correlation coefficient (r_xy) of 0.463 was higher than the index value of correlation coefficient of the Product Moment table (r_t) of 0.361 which meant that the null hypothesis (H_0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis ((H_a)) was accepted. In conclusion, there was a significance correlation between the two variables. Based on the findings explained above, the researcher assumes that the more students watching English movie the more their listening skill will be increase which means watching English movie can be used as media to improve students’ listening skill. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the English teacher could use movie as a media in language teaching in improving students’ listening skill. Keywords: listening, habit, movie, correlation
