Abstract

This research discussed the students’ vocabulary mastery and translation ability. The purpose of this research was to find out whether there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and students’ ability in translating English text into Indonesian language or not. The population of the research was the eighth semester at C-03 class of English Education Study Program of Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji in the academic year of 2018/2019 consisting of 22 students. The researcher took all the students as the sample by applying saturated sampling technique. This research used correlation study by collecting the data from the vocabulary and translation tests. After conducting the research, the researcher found that the average score of the students’ vocabulary mastery was 68.64 that referring in a good category. Likewise, their translation score was 74 that referring in a good category. Moreover, the result of data analysis used Minitab 17 and SPSS 16 versions showed that vocabulary and translation were distributed normal (0.100), homogeneous (0.192), and linear (0.425). Furthermore, the result of the correlation coefficient between the two variables (vocabulary mastery and translation ability) was 0.783, while the critical value for 22 samples and 95% confidence was 0.423. Since the correlation coefficient obtained (0.783) was higher than the table value (0.423), it meant that there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and students’ ability in translating English text into Indonesian language in the class C-03 at semester eight of English Education Study Program of Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji in the academic year of 2018/2019 and the correlation was considered to be substantial.
