Abstract

The objective of this research was to know theeffect of herringbone technique on students’ reading comprehension in announcement text at the 8th grade of SMP Negeri 7. Research design that researcher used in this research isquasi-experimental Nonequivalent (Pre-Test and Post-Test) with quantitative approach. The sample of this research was 72 students taken from eighth grade of SMP Negeri 7 Tanjungpinang which was chosen through cluster random sampling technique. The sample of this research was two classes consisting of 36 students for experimental class and 36 students for control class. In the experimental class, the researcher used herringbone technique and in control class the researcher used scientific approach to teach students. The treatments were held in 2 meetings in which 4x40 minutes for each class. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted pre-test and post-test by serving an essay test which consisted of 10 items for each test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS to computed t-test. The result of statistical calculation, the mean score of pre-test in experimental class is 51.8 and 84.4 for post-test. Meanwhile, the mean score of pre-test in control class is 51.39 and 52.78 for posttest. Moreover, in the table of hypothetical test, it can be seen that α = 0.05. It proved that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted because p-value>0.05. It means there is an effect of herringbone technique on students’ reading comprehension in announcement text at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 7 Tanjungpinang.
