Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research mainly described an analysis of idiomatic expressions in Education online news of The Jakarta Post. This study was chosen because two considerations that The Jakarta Post had won several awards and been described as being Indonesia’s Leading English-Language daily and have a lot of sentences of idiomatic expressions. This research aimed at describing the types and meanings of idiomatic expression found in education online news of The Jakarta Post published on May 1st until May 31st 2019. The analysis was used to explain the qualitative analysis results and to discuss how an idiomatic expression belonged to a certain type of idiom and to explain the close of meanings of each type of idiom. The idiomatic expressions found in education online news of The Jakarta Post were divided into the five types based on theory of Palmer (1976). It can be concluded that phrasal verb was the most common type of idiomatic expressions. There were 45 idioms that belonged to this type. The second most was frozen idioms that found 20 idioms. Also, there were few of grammatical restriction and partial idioms. It was not dominant types which have only 6 and 4 of 75 data. And, there was no syntactic restriction found.
